Homopolymers of this protein form a stable intracytoplasmic filamentous network connecting myofibrils to each other and to the plasma membrane. Mutations in this gene are associated with desmin-related myopathy, a familial cardiac and skeletal myopathy (CSM), and with distal myopathies.

Desmin. Reacts specifically with desmin in cultured cells or tissue preparations originating from chicken, human, bovine and mouse tissue. AB907 specifically stains the wide desmin band in immunoblot at a molecular weight of 50-55 kD.
